Taking currency to Morocco

Country forums / Africa / Morocco

Hi,

I'm going on a trip to Morocco on Thursday and am trying sort out money. I know that Moroccon Dirhams are used but trying to get some in the UK to take with us is proving hard. Is this normal? If so, what is the best thing to take instead (e.g Stirling/Euros), can anyting else be used anywhere and how easy is it to get some changed upon arrival e.g At the airport?

Cheers

The dirham is a soft currency and you will probably have no luck finding it over there. Exchange your Euros or pounds upon arrival.

There was a recent post on this. Just use a ATM and get dirhams out there.

Yes, use an ATM at the airport to get dirhams. Be sure to notify your bank in advance of your trip and find out your daily withdrawal limit.
Technically it is illegal to bring dirhams into or take them out of Morocco. As peterscot says, there was a recent lengthy posting on this topic.

As far as I know you can't get the currency outside of Morocco, so you can change your Euros or Pounds at the airport. It is also illegal to take the currency over the border, so change any local currency back to Euro or pound before you leave as the local currency will be useless in Euroland countries or the UK.

People keep saying you can't buy dirhams outside Morocco. Dirhams were for sale at Gatwick two weeks ago. They will almost certainly be for sale at Heathrow, too. The rate won't be that good. But someone on the post people are talking about said there was a legal amount you can bring in or out. Seriously, use the ATMs or change sterling at the bureau de change when you arrive. Dont bother with euros and don't buy dirhams in the UK.
