Taking bus on Main Road from International Airport?

Country forums / Central America / Belize

Hello all,

I would like to take a bus on the Main Road (north to Orange Walk) after flying into the International Airport. Has anyone done this? Is it possible to get a taxi to take me the 1 1/2 miles from the airport to the Main Road, or do taxi drivers hold out for longer fares? Is it easy enough to flag down a bus?

Thanks,
Margems

I've never taken a taxi just to the Northern Highway, but a number of folks have told me they have done so. Taxi drivers of course try to hold out for the bigger fares into Belize City (US$25-$30). You may have to wait a bit until the crowd from an arriving flight thins out. Can't recall what people have said they've paid for the short trip to the highway -- something like US$6, I think. Local buses going north will usually stop for you. You'll probably see some other people waiting for a bus.

Walk it. I havent, but I fly through Cancun, then take a bus or boat south - - - which you might consider. It's half the price, for me (indianapolis).

Quite a few people have told me about getting out to the highway to get a bus.

The most recent one said he walked, but wished he got a taxi, not because of the distance but because it was a very hot day.

The taxi fare for that distance should be BZ$6 (US$3), but airport taxis might charge more. Another person said he paid something like BZ$10 to $15.

Others said they started walking and were picked up by cars heading out to the highway.

As you approach the intersection with the highway, Belize City is on your right. Orange Walk is on your left, so you have to cross to the other side of the highway and wait. When you see a bus coming, wave your arm up and down to get it to stop; Express buses will not stop. The sign in the front window of the bus might say Corozal or Chetumal, but the bus will stop in OW.

This is a common way to get a bus in Belize.

Another reason the bus might not stop...

The buses come directly from the bus terminal and might be full, I mean standing in the aisle full.

If you have a big pack, the conductor might let you in the rear emergency exit door. Keep an eye on your luggage at all times.

Thanks for the helpful replies!

Eddystonelightkeep, I already have my ticket and only paid tax, as I was able to use award miles. :-)
