I get the impression that flights from Taipei to Macau are like a commuter train, turn up and go. Is this correct ?
Anyone live in Taipei to confirm this ?
I am considering NOT booking an onwards flight from Taiwan, but leaving it open - Taiwan seems so interesting I don't want to pin myself down.

I've found Air Macau to offer an amazing number of flights to Macau and return to Taipei. http://en.airmacau.com.mo/
Most of those flights are for gambling I assume.
Most are 6000NT or so... expensive

Christmas is NOT a public holiday in Taiwan. As there are many flights to Macau you shouldn't have any problems getting a ticket.

New Year (1 January) is a public holiday and flights on that weekend are more likely to be heavily booked.

Taiwanese people need visas to go to Macau and Hong Kong. The visas are very easy to obtain, but it does mean that they have to do some kind of advance planning before going to Macau. Consequently I would not expect Taipei-Macau flights to be consistently sold out so I would think it would be OK to just turn up. If you think 6000 NT is expensive (this is very roughly 200 US dollars) then I wish you an awful lot of luck in finding something cheaper. That, my friend, is what we in the US call "a bargain".

Thanks for those replies, that helps me make up my mind.
I'll look for a cheaper ticket but as #2 jman98 said, that might be hard.

Would be cheaper to return to KL for AUD 170 than to fly to Macau...hm...

Eva air and Dragonair often have specials on flights to HK and Macau (I can't remember if they were from Taipei or Kaohsiung though). It's probably cheaper to book in advance - just turning up usually means you pay full price in my experience.

I checked air Asia:

Taipei to Bangkok => AUD 122 early January 2010

and yet cheapest ticket Tiapei to Macau is 230AUD.

Market forces at work I guess.

Will skip Macau.

sorry to sound like an advertising blurb but the costs of stopping in Macau are too much, at this rate it's cheaper to do Macau from Bangkok than direct from Taipei...
