Suez - can you visit the canal currently?

Hi,
I'm in Dahab and will be catching the bus north to Cairo in the next couple of days. I would like to stop over in Suez and see ships transiting the canal, but I am wondering with the current situation in Suez, is this currently possible? I've heard the military might be blocking access to the port?

Hi, we travelled from Port Said to the Sinai desert last year in May and crossed the Canal through the tunnel. The Canal Zone is heavily army secured. We never saw so many army stations with tens of thousands of artilery guns and tanks. But there was no possibility at all to take pictures nor from the military equipment nor from the Canal itself. There is no possibilty to aproach the Canal close by. Except in Port Said itself, where you can see the harbour canal branch and where you can take the free canal ferry to cross the canal to Port Fuad. We stayed in Hotel de la Poste, a budget place we can recommend you.
