Steinlager

Does anyone know anything about the Steinlager competition for people in the US to go to New Zealand? They have 'passport' applications, and a bunch of videos on their website (www.winnickslife.com). I'm thinking about entering, it looks pretty easy to win at the moment, but I wondered if anyone knows anything about Steinlager - they're a reliable company, right? Are they well-known in NZ?

Don't know much about the company at all, except the brand has been around for about thirty years, and has (somehow successfully) been marketed overseas a lot in that time, and gives the second worse hangover of anything I've ever been stupid enough to imbibe. (The worst was a mixture of Singha beer and Mekong whiskey.)
IMO it's pretty horrid beer.

Steinlager is a shocking beer - that aftertaste, sends shivers down my spine as I type this. I don't know if anyone has tried their "Pure" variety yet (marketed by Harvey Keitel) - but the premise sounds good (e.g. no additives, preservatives etc..).

As a NZer I can confidently say that hardly anyone drinks Steinlager IN NZ, and why it's so well known outside NZ is beyond me. There are dozens of FAR better beers in NZ than Steiny. The company itself is VERY reliable though, no problems there.

The company is very reliable indeed, and the beer itself is exported world wide, or brewed on licence. And i have heard that it styled itself on a very successful product, it modeled its self on Heineken, even down to its green label!

It has also become synonymous with the All Blacks as they have been one of their sponsors for the last decade or two.
Promoted as a corporate beer, and IMO that is where it should stay......it is bloody horrible - expensive and lives off its reputation.

Steinlager is brewed by Lion Nathan which is largely owned by Kirin Breweries of Japan, so yes, the company has some substance.

I have yet to see Steinlager Pure on the shelves in any bar.

I remember Steinie blue! same beer brown bottle instead of green and 10c cheaper. Pure is bland but the hangover is not as bad.
there are microbreweries across nzed making far superior beer.

Mac's copperhop, or Monteiths Pilsener. Now those are good beers!

had a couple of sips of the new 'pure' and it didn't leave that horrid after taste that you get with the normal one :)

Sounds like Steinlager is the Kiwi version of Fosters.

Yeah, I had a Steinlager "pure' as well, and while I agree it didn't leave any after taste, that was because it didn't have much of a taste to begin with. Normal Steinlager is a bit more readily available and consumed a bit more often than Fosters seems to be in Australia.

heh, those win nicks life ads are funny. but yea the beer ain't nothing to get too exited about. Would definitely be a cool prize to win though. (if you when and when you get to nz, drink monteiths, its an awesome nz beer)
