Staying at the Dead Sea

Country forums / Middle East / Jordan

Hello all you travellers,
I will be heading to Amman next weekend on the 6th of April and was hoping to spend a few days enjoying the healing effects of the Dead Sea before heading further south. I have visited the Dead Sea before on the Israeli side many years ago (actually 28 years ago) and I loved it. From what I can see on the internet, it seems one can not stay there unless you stay at one of the 5 *** Star hotels which I think cost over a 100 euros a night. I will be travelling alone and was wondering, whether it is best just to visit it from Amman or Madaba each day and return in the afternoon.

Also, if anyone has any advice on a good place to stay in Amman to meet up with other travellers, that would be great. Thanks in advance !!! One bit of advice for those going into the Dead Sea, never wear your contact lens. ( I learnt the hard way ). I still remember it.

Hi,

Madaba could be a good option because you can find there cheap accommodations if you don't want to stay "down" along the seashore in 5 stars resorts.

When I was there, I was visiting from Amman and go north but the resort I had choose for the day was abandoned and I had limited facilities. I forget the name but it was in 2005…

We stayed at the Mujib Chalets owned by the RSCN and they are right on their own beach, though not inexpensive, but certainly less than the 5star hotels.

Also, IMHO, downtown Amman is the best place to stay in as it has a lot of character and important sites to see, plus you will meet plenty of other travelers there.

I also recommend the chalets at Wadi Mujib. It´s not cheap but far cheaper than the luxury hotels at Dead Sea.
I stayed at Mariam hotel in Madaba. The receptionist called Amman and made a booking for me at the chalets at Wadi Mujib. You can´t just turn up at the reception desk at Wadi Mujib you need a booking first at their Amman office!

You can stay at Mariam Hotel in Madaba as well and do daytours with taxi or rental car. But take care on Fridays and weekends it can be very heavy traffic to Amman beach from Amman. Mariam hotel is probably the best budget hotel in the whole Jordan.

Additional bonus if you stay at Wadi Mujib Chalets is the fantastic Wadi Mujib gorge.
