Starting up in Canada

Hi

I am thinking of heading over to Canada. I have Canadian Citizenship but am from New Zealand.
If I was to go to the Ski resorts/areas etc I would prefer to do work other than cleaning or bar work. What other work do other travellers pick up whilst up at the ski resorts/areas?

Also I am sort of torn between studying and travel and I am thinking of getting a degree in sports massage and then head over to Canada. I would love to travel now but I feel that getting a degree may help in getting better work in Canada and also when I have finished travelling I have a degree!

I am 26 and work in the accounts department at the moment.

I am confused as to what to do???

i did a bit of travelling before getting my degree but then again i started long before 26. i'd get your degree, maybe while studying try to wrangle an internship in canada for credit toward it? just a thought.

Yeah Johnny, I have just come back from spending a year in Australia and two years away in the Uk touring Europe so have done plenty of travelling.
I think I will go for my degree, at least I could start it then maybe finish it when I get back??
Maybe an internship would be a good idea as well.

I'd get the degree first. You'll earn more and have a greater chance of finding work abroad if you're a massage therapist than doing whatever you are doing now. A friends nephew who is a massage therapist was easily able to pick up a job in the ski resorts of Alberta. A degree = more money; more money = more travel.
Thirty five years ago I got my degree and it has paid off many times over in the ability to travel the world over and still enjoy a comfortable life style between trips.

Why not do both and do part of your degree abroad? Or, kill two birds with one stone by applying to schools in Canada.

Got to agree with you rther, those in the know either have a degree of some sorts, or a trade thats in demand. Plenty of people do it without either of course, but having something to fall back on does make it easier.

I Af your aim is to work in sports message and therapy, go to whistler for 5 months. The number of sports clinics in this town is crazy. You can always find work in one of the hotels as a houseperson or barback to tide you over. My only suggestion would be to arrive after mid november and hunt down accomodation ands work before you leave, there arent enough housing units for locals let alone transiant workers. If you get employeed with the " mountain" as we call it in Whiz then you can get staff accomdation,( 4 people to a room, a dump but cheap) depends on your lifestyle I guess. Right now Fairmont Hotels is sending human resources staff to Oz to recruit.You could always try whistler out go back home finish your degree and come back with solid references and work experince under your belt. The money is here. trust me
