Spesh Of The Week (UK)....

Interest forums / Get Stuffed

Aldi (UK) this week....
On the vine tomatoes - 69p for 600gr.
Incredibly tasty - and nicer than M&S toms, which are £1.99 for the same amount.

Nice batty! I love on-the-vine tomatoes but hardly ever buy them since they tend to be to pricey. We got some mini tomatoes from our garden (they're supposed to be normal tomatoes but didn't grow much) and I put them on our BLT's made with homemade bacon and lettuce from our garden. It was yummy.

It would have been on home baked bread but my family won't eat BLT's on anything but white bread. And no, I'm not ready to start making homemade mayonnaise, so don't even go there. :)

1

Oh - it all sounds divine, except.... I can't stand lettuce.

2

Hey - Lidl (UK) have just started baking bread on the premises. The whole shop smells wonderful.
Nowt wrong with Lidl. I use it very much when I'm out of Britain.
Good quality - good prices. A bit like Aldi.

3

Good deal...but we don't have Aldi in Italy (or at least not in Palermo). We got Lidl though.... ;-)

At least the tomatoes from the market are good...or you can always grow your own.

4

They bake bread here too (in some of them).

We use it a lot for non-Italian basics, but also for meat and fruit and vegetables sometimes...its great quality for the price.

5

Ha - that would be nice. I might ask if they would.

6

I haven't tried Aldi's tomatoes, billy.

I have tried their other veg. - and found them almost tasteless; so I never buy Aldi veg - it looks great, though. (I'm guessing it's irradiated - it's the only way I can fathom how food can look so good and be almost devoid of taste.)

Aldi's wine remains superb.

7

I love Aldi I can buy nearly everything there. Veg tends to be hit or miss, sometimes the Veg is really good and some great deals, othertimes it all looks like its just about to rot. I haven't yet worked out if a certain day of the week is better then others. Less money on groceries is more cash in the travelling kitty.

8

Very good shout by *9 - marichel1981, re: Aldi fruit n veg. I dunno what's the best day either.
Sometimes the shelves are packed to breaking point, other days they're empty.
Could be a Thursday or a Monday - either way ! !
Quality does vary a lot too, as mentioned. I buy raspberries there, cos they're quite cheap.
However, I don't eat them - they're for my parrot ! !

9

they're for my parrot ! !

they're for my parrot ! !

Seriously, billy?

10

Polly wanna raspberry.

11

Pauly wanna raspberry?

12

Ha - ha.
He's a boy and wouldn't like me calling him Polly. Especially if he's on one.
Yep tonyzzz1, seriously.

13

Yep tonyzzz1, seriously

Is yer parrot called Captain Flint, billy? :)

14

I'm glad I don't live in a place where I would consider getting supermarket tomatoes in August.

Just sayin.

15

How lucky you are.
Sure, we can grow 'em.
But when they're as good and as cheap as this, there's no need.
Takes up too much beer time.

16

I don't grow them myself these days, I buy them from the farmer who does. They're cheaper than that.

17

I used to have an allotment and 2 greenhouses.
Hours of hard work and two minutes to eat the stuff.
Sure the produce was nice, but I guess I just ain't that fussy.
I still do a grow a few potatoes and herbs, garlic, pepper plants etc. in my back garden, but only on occasion.

18

On the vine tomatoes

Around here, those are available in winter, greenhouse grown, and often imported. Somewhat better than other supermarket tomatoes in winter, but I only buy them if I really, really need fresh tomatoes.

Right now, I'm with Vinny. I hit the farmer's markets. Alas, with the heat wave we've been having (it's been over 104/40 every day for the last week and it won't break for a few more days) tomato production is going to slow down. With that heat and 15% humidity or less, it's hard to pour enough irrigation water on them.

But since it is tomato season, I think it's time for my annual BLT post. I'll do it later, after I make a special trip to get the bacon I prefer for that.

19

It would have to be just a BT for me.
I don't like lettuce.
Then again a BCT is nice. That's with raw cabbage instead.
I'm hungry now.
Smoked haddock with wild rice for tea.

20

Same here as regards the first paragraph, nutrax. Mostly I wouldn't buy tomatoes in winter, but those are about the best you can get if you're desperate.

21

My daughter only eats BT and last time we had one our lettuce was a bit droopy so I also had a BT. I'm hungry now too. Poo.

22

I usually use sorrel from the garden instead of lettuce. Spinach would work too.

23

I actually don't need either on BLT's or BT's as the case may be. I put a little on for a different type of crunch. I like spinach in salads on occasion.

24

Oh - never considered spinach on a BLT.
Gonna give that a go, for sure.

25

It doesn't sound appealing to me, but that's just me.

26

Hey, if we all liked the same food, there probably wouldn't be much variety to choose from.
Might be nice with pak-choi too.
I'm going on a spinach/pak choi (either or) mission tomorrow.

27

Absolutely batty! And GS would be really boring.

28

I must say that I like the way ye write, billy - you are a master at deflecting that argumentative Vinny's comments. I much admire yer approach.

29

Oh - I try to post my comments, similar to a yoghurt with nothing added.... Natural ! !
Artificial ingredients and additives never make the cut for me.
Tesco is doing 3 passion fruits for 80p this week.... Very good quality too.
Every Little Helps.

:-)

30

Artificial ingredients and additives never make the cut for me.

Very well put.

31

Shopping list already made out for the farm shop later...

Veg to buy and a freezer to fill.

Tesco have spotted that we're not using them for much now as we keep getting money off or extra points vouchers through the post or spat out by the till on the rare occasions that we do buy their wares... The £4.50 Club Card voucher they sent out recently was largely due to petrol!

32

Those Tesco Points....

Big Brother.... Or what?

33

You might think that, but I couldn't possibly comment...

34

It always knows what you used to buy, but haven't lately.
Plus look at the price since you last bought it ! !

35

Oh - you're so right Tony.
And I can usually have it all done and dusted in 15 minutes or so.

36

Those Tesco Points....

And therein lies another reason for doing some shopping at Aldi. billy. The check-out operator does not ask:

do you need help with your shopping?

do you need any bags?

do you have a loyalty card?

are you collecting stamps for x,y,z?

And, in Aldi, I don't have to dodge the double-glazing saleswoman whilst heading for the exit.
