Spanish School HondorusCountry forums / Central America / Honduras
Hi, Wondering which schools you've been to in Honduras, looking for one with one-on-one classes(wide range of skill level), home stay option, smaller town preferably, and good prices. Any good/bad experiences? Thanks, Giuseppe
I went to Ixbalanque in Cpan- individual instructions- good activities. I stayed with a family , had my own room and they were very nice. | 1
I had a great experience at Ixbalanque in 2005 and my son also in 2006. I'm heading back this summer with a group in tow. Lots of photos of Copán Ruinas and surrounds and my travelogue are linked below if you're interested. Happy trails! | 2
I didn't do any Spanish in Honduras, but I would love to have done some in Copan Ruinas. It was an amazing little town -- IMO much nicer to spend time in then a town like La Ceiba (another location of Spanish courses). You could do it on Utila (lots of people were), although you won't get the same immersion experience there (the only reason to do it there would be if you want to dive also while you take the course). | 3
My take, after studying in Copán, La Ceiba, and on Utila is the same as NicoleSlaw's. Studying in Copán at the Ixbalanque was wonderful all around. The school in La Ceiba, Central Am. Spanish School was excellent and my host family phenomenal, but the city itself is not that appealing. There are wonderful activities in the area, though, and it's a great jumping off point for the Bay Islands. I studied with CASS on Utila, too, a poor immersion environment though my teacher was excellent and I was pleased with my progress. Great diving! Good luck and keep us posted! | 4
Is it worth doing this sort of thing if you only have a week (or maybe even a bit less) to devote to it, or is it a waste of time unless you've got a fairly significant chunk of time for it? My Spanish is enough to get by, but not nearly good enough to have any sort of regular conversation. I'd love to improve it, but I've a pretty limited amount of time on this trip... | 5
In my opinion you would be amazed at how much your Spanish can grow and the bits you already have can pull together in a week with a good teacher. My travel experiences in CA get more interesting and more meaningful as my Spanish improves - highly recommended. | 6
I agree with hopefullist. I have enough spanish to get by, it was 3 years with out spanish when I took only two weeks immersion in Costa Rica and those two weeks I learned more then 2-3 years in high school. I'm confident with my spanish in order to get around and have basic conversations but I know a week immersion class will not only give us a chance to soak in the culture of a place for a week but a great way to kick start speaking spanish again. Plush my girlfriend, whom I'm going with wants to take a week since it's been quite a while since she's spoken spanish as well. | 7
Thanks, I think I'll try to give it a whirl then. Much appreciated. | 8
