Southern Ethiopia

Just a couple of questions:
How difficult is it to travel in southern Ethiopia independent, on busses? I understand hiring a jeep is an option but that would be quite expensive for a couple.
And, is it necessary to have a local guide to get around without feeling lost?

In which part do you want to go ?
The Southern part is not only the Omo but also the lakes of the Rift, the Bale, Sof Omar and around, Butajira, ... And many more.
The more complicated part for using public transports is the Omo.
Going South of Arba Minch using them is a real challenge. Briggs inside the Bradt gives some informations but it will possible to reach few places and it will be always time consuming.

For personal reasons (I don’t like human zoo), I’ve never been in the Omo (and I don’t want) but I travelled in the Southern part of Ethiopia. It’s easy to move with public transports but it could be really time consuming for some parts of the region.
You have plenty of accommodations and it’s not a problem to move.
It’s important to choose the place(s) you want to visit.

Thanks again, that's valuable advice. Due to time constraints I'd spend not more than three weeks in southern Ethiopia, and plan my itinerary accordingly. I'd still prefer independent travel, using public transport, if that's reasonable.

We just flew to Addis and want to go to Omo next thurday 12th. Are you here? We could maybe use public transport south then share a jeep? Any ideas from other readers. Thanks
