Somaliland Visa on arrival at Tog Wajaale Border

Country forums / Africa / Ethiopia

As per website of Somaliland Mission in New York
All Travelers to Somaliland should be aware that you can get Visa to enter Somaliland at arrival port (Sea, Land or Airport). To get additional details about the types of Visa, click here. However, if you prefer to get your Visa in advance from the Somaliland Mission in the USA. Please follow these instructions.
I want to know if anyone has tried and gotten visa on arrival at Tog Wajaale border. Thanks

Tog Wajalee doesn't exist.
The border is between Togochale (the last Ethiopian village before the border) and Wajalee who is the first village in Somaliland, just in front of Togochale and on the other side of the border.
You have minibuses from Jijiga to Togochale and shared/contracted taxis between Wajalee and Hargeisa.

I passed through this border 2 days ago with a Somaliland visa got in Addis (US$70). However, I will be returning the same way, as the border with Djibouti is currently closed & the Djibouti embassy & the consulate in Dire Dawa will NOT issue visas for overland travel anyway. I will ask if they can issue a Somaliland visa at the border & post the answer here.

Thanks for your response, I am waiting for your update.

There is also the issue of getting bak into Ethiopia. Last time i heard........the Eth office in Hargeisa wld not issue visa.
SO you
Either
come to Eth with multi entry visa
OR
you get VOA on arrival when you FLY back to Addis. No Eth visas issued at land borders...

It could be a real challenge to have an Ethiopian multi entry visa then the second option should be the more realistic one (VOA at Bole when you are coming back from Somaliland)

Firstly, announced in the Somali press today that the Loyaada border between Somaliland & Djibouti has now re-opened.
Will be passing through Wachaale on my way back to Ethiopia end of the week & will try & remember to ask about a Somaliland visa on the border.
A German I met here in Hargeisa has just had to fly back to Addis today because the Ethiopian embassy would not issue a land visa. Something I had heard a few weeks ago now confirmed as you state in your post Mexicosquare. It seems they want you to fly Ethiopian. The other option regarding returning to Ethiopia is to ask for a re-entry visa at either Addis or Dire Dawa immigration before you arrive in Somaliland. I got a multi-entry in Khartoum.

Crossed the Wachaale border again into Ethiopia a few days ago. Immigration on the Somaliland side told me that NO visas are issued at the border for entry into Somaliland. You must get one in Addis.

The main problem (for a tourist) in the Horn is not really a security problem but a bureaucratic one...
Crossing the borders overland can be challenging...
