Snowboarding...best place to go near Vienna?

Country forums / Western Europe / Austria

My husband and I will be in Vienna for four days and then have three or four days to go skiing/boarding. We will probably rent a car or train and since we have many days we can go as far as 5 or so hours out to hit the best ski resorts. I have never been to Europe so I am in desperate need of some advice. This leg of the trip is on me so I want to pick a great spot. First off is there any snow??? We will be in Vienna until November 21st and then will have from the 21st through the 25th or so. I met some people while in Chili last week that said the snow had started to fall is this the case? Where can I get more info on the ski conditions? Any suggestions on where to stay? How much are lift tickets? Getting there from Vienna? This is part two of our honeymoon so we want to get some skiing in...If there is no skiing to be had do to weather conditions what would people recommend doing for 5 or so days around Vienna (or other countries near)?

Many questions I know but any information is helpful. Thanks!

Peace

there has already been some snowfall in Austria, but don't expect any to be in Vienna. Most ski resorts near to Vienna are at low altitudes, so there's never a guarantee for snow, also they are rather small, and the winter season in most regions starts around December 1st.

as 5 or so hours out to hit the best ski resorts
5 hours, then we are not talking any more about "near Vienna", within 5 hours, you can almost drive across Austria!
This gives you a lot more possibilities.

You could maybe drive to Salzburg (about 2,5 hours), a beautiful "romantic" city. And then drive to a ski resort in the area.
There are bigger ski resorts, also glaciers, and some of the ski lifts will be open end of November.
have a look at these
Ski amdadé --> open

Kitzsteinhorn glacier --> open

ski saalbach --> didn't manage to find the begin of their season, could be that they will still be closed.

For a 3 day lift pass expect to pay at least 100 € per person; without renting equipment

The nearest place to Vienna is the Semmering/Zauberberg: http://www.zauberberg.at/de/zauberberg/
It's best to go during the week though, as all Viennese flock to this place on weekends, as it is so close.
