Snorkeling in January

The guidebooks suggest that there is some good snorkeling in Imhambane and Vilankulo. However, I'll be there in January and wondering if anyone has experience with the waters at that time of year - jellyfish, turbulence, etc. I'd rather not carry my snorkeling gear if it's not likely I'll use it.
