Snack attacks...

Country forums / Scandinavia & the Nordics / Norway

We're heading over to Norway in two weeks and whilst we've booked all of our accommodation and most of our train/bus or sea journeys, we're looking to get hold of some specific price guidelines to fine-tune our costings...

We're having our main meal of the day at the breakfast time buffet at hotels or hostels, so we're wondering what the current costs are for takeaway coffee, muffins and pizza are at the likes of 7/11 stores or what the price of a pzzia meal deal is at branches of Dolly Dimples.

We will be treating ourselves at other places (Gud Brodt and Dr. Livingstone's or Cafe Opera and Pygmalion in Bergen for example - the only stop off where breakfast isn't provided at our accommodation), but as it's five years since our last visit, we'd just like some up to date info in readiness for snack attacks...

Thanks in anticipation..

K & C

Take away coffee from 25 Nok and up (black), depends if it's from a 7-11 or a barista bar.

Pizza slice the same (7-11)

More good tips regarding Bergen and low-cost eating are:

Pingvinen - great Norwegian everyday food of excellence :)
Naboen (downstairs) - affordable Swedish and Norwegian cuisine
Kafé Spesial - affordable and tasty pizzas and pastas
Kroathai - Nice thai food.

Places like Dolly Dimple's, Peppe's Pizza and Egon often have an eat as much as you can pizza & salad buffet for around 100 NOK - usually untill 6 o'clock in the afternoon.

Thanks very much for that information - one week to go.

Just got to get another couple of memory cards for the cameras and pick up some kroner and then we're ready to roll!

Just a quick word of warning: Cafe Opera is still a great place to for hanging out, people-watching, checking your emails, having a coffee or a few drinks - but the quality of their kitchen has really gone downhill in recent years. The other places mentioned by eiriku (particularly Kafe Spesial) are much better value for money.

Thanks for that info - we ate at Cafe Opera last time we were over (five years ago) and it was okay, even though it was a pretty busy night.

We get the same thing over here in the UK, but there are times when that's due to a forced change of chef or chefs in either curry houses or those offering Far Eastern Cuisine.

This time next week we'll be over in Norway. First stop Larvik, next stop Arendal.

And we still can't believe how reasonable the prices have been for the train trips and the ferry between Stavanger and Bergen.... My 11th visit, GF's second...

We're back and here's the update!

Coffee -20 to 25 NOK (large or small cup) at Narvessen and 7/11. Both have coffee cards though - buy four cups and the 5th one is free.

Pizza around 19 NOK per slice in the above, but Narvessen have a 2 pieces offer for 29 NOK - 7/11 is 39 for 2 pieces. Hot dogs 25 NOK + depending on the deals of the week.

Deli de Luca provided snacks too in Bergen and Oslo - 75 NOK for a panini and drink or calzone and drink. Coffee and cookie 28 NOK.

Evening meals in Bergen were at Pygmailion - food was as good as we remembered it being on previous visits and we ate there on the two nights we were in the city. Bill for two was however around 400 NOK for two with drinks - definitely treat nights!

In Arendal, Stavanger and Oslo we ate at Peppe's Pizza one night and ate from supermarkets on the other night. We also did this in Larvik, but the meal out there was in the hotel we stayed in - Hotel Greven. This meal was also rather good!

One small tip for those undertaking long train journeys. Upgrade to Komfotklass for 90 NOK and you get a comfier seat plus free coffee too.

Cheers

PS Whilst breakfast buffets were good in Moss, Arendal, Stavanger and Oslo, the ones in Larvik at the Hotel Greven were on the smaller side and it was self catering only in Bergen. On the eat in the room nights we just went to the supermarket and bought bread, cheese, ham and yogurt. Beer and Simpsons fans may like to know that in Bergen's Leroy Mat supermarket in the Galleriet you can buy bottles of Duff beer...
