short wave radio

I am looking to buy a radio to use whilst travelling in India (world service) Anybody got any tips? they range from around £50 up and i am not sure if the cheaper ones have a good reception.

For many years, I used a shortwave radio different parts of the world.

My radio is a small Sony with eight shortwave bands, plus AM & FM, and has a casette player. The antenna is built-in and retractable. Reception was OK, but the signal "footprint" is also a factor.

I stopped using it because many broadcasters discontinued shortwave service or cut it back. So before buying a shortwave radio, make sure there is a signal in the region where you'll be living.

If you need a better antenna, you might need a radio that allows attachment of an external antenna. I couldn't do that with my radio.

Now I listen to radio broadcast on internet.

The Russians make some cheapish radios with numerous short wave bands.

As said, if you have internet, you can listen to many local stations around the world with perfect clarity.

As already suggested, nowadays it's more practical, if you just want the World Service, to Google it through internet radio. Nicer reception too.

The radio mentioned in my previous post cost about US$60 twenty years ago. I am happy with it.
