Short trip to Honduras w/kidsCountry forums / Central America / Honduras
Hello All, My family is heading to Honduras for some volunteer work outside of Tegucigalpa in late December. Before the work part of the trip we have four days to see a little of the country. My thought was to rent a car at the airport and drive to Copan Valley and spend our free days exploring there. We then have to return to Tegucigalpa to join the rest of our work group. My wife and I are traveling with our two young children (5&3). We all speak basic to pretty good Spanish. Any thoughts on both the driving aspect and that schedule would be most appreciated! In particular, if that type of journey seems reasonable I would really like to pick a small town to stay in the whole time and explore from their. Rustic is fine, even preferred. Muchas gracias, Mike
Mike, From Tegucigalpa you'll spend the better part of 2 of your 4 days driving to and from Copan. Doable but maybe not the best use of time. There's plenty to do and see in the Tegus area for the whole 4 days or rent a car for just a couple of days and go to someplace like Yuscaran then stay in Tegus for a couple of days doing day trips to Valle de Angeles and La Tigra national park. You won't need or want a car in the city. Just some food for thought. | 1
If you have the opportunity to see Copan, my suggestion would be don't miss it. Copan is spectacular, better than any ruins I have seen in Greece and Turkey by far. It is also the only pristine area of Honduras, a country I love, that I have visited. If I was to rate two days in Tegucigalpa with one of them a day trip at Valle de Angeles against two hours in Copan, I would take two hours in Copan. Roatan is fantastic, but again, my love of Copan has no competition. | 2
Mike I think you could pack in alot of fun in copan !! If you have five days you will be traveling a good part of 2 but it will be worth it. What you should do is go straight to Twisted Tanyas for a great meal (dinner) then Have a great time | 3
Hello All and thanks for taking the time to respond to my post. As an update I ended up deciding not to go to Copan due to all the driving and our limited time. Our itinerary now takes us up to Valle de Angeles for two nights and then on to El Rosario for two nights where we hope to do some hiking/exploring at Parque Nacional La Tigra. I'd be interested in hearing from folks who have explored up there before. Thanks again for the comments. Mike | 4
