Setting up base in Kampala - a few questions

Country forums / Africa / Uganda

Hi, all of you Uganda specialists out there.

It looks like my wife and I will be based in Kampala for the next couple of years, moving there in a few short months. After close to 5 years living, working and travelling in and through Latin America we are very excited about that change (bombs notwithstanding).

I have a few questions I hope someone in the know may be able to answer:

  1. Internet: For my freelance work I would need a decent internet connection. Reports on the availibility and speed of internet in Kampala are wildly different, and probably outdated as soon as they're published. Does anyone know how easy/difficult it is to get a good speed, and how much would I have to shell out per month?

  2. House: There is a similar post already on TT, but I'd be grateful if someone could add some extra info. What reasonably nice living areas are there, not a million miles from the Kira/Old Kira road? The other post mentioned Wandegeya, Bukoto and Ntinda. We would like a reasonably safe area with possibly none of that gated-in bollocks, if such a thing is possible. I have never been to East Africa so I'm not too sure about the housing situation.
How hard is it to find a place (with some sort of garden) in those areas, perhaps particulary Bukoto, and how much rent approx. would we be looking at per month?

  3. Car: Form what I've seen, prices for second-hand 4x4 wheels seem to be rather stiff. What sort of money would I be looking at if I wanted to buy a Land Cruiser, Land Rover or- if those are too expensive - a similar, cheaper 4x4 for which spares are easily found? Can be old and battered, as long as its bowels are working alright. Is the buying process fairly straightforward or a massive pain? Are there any trustworthy dealers or are cars best bought privately?

Cheers.

  1. Orange dongle plug and play: 100 USD for 3 months of 6 GB at very fast speed of 1 Mbps. Great.
For UNcapped internet (download as much as you want): Infocom for 1 month unlimited at 300 USD/month for 256 kB. So forget that.

  2. There are only a couple of places where you want to live. Close to Old Kira: Naguru Hill, Kololo, Bokoto, Ntinda. Traffic is a bitch! Most expats live in Kololo (the expensive hill) or Naguru (the slightly cheaper hill). It is now not overly hard to find a place anymore; prices have come down a bit and there is some availabibilty again. 3 bedroom goes for 1000 USD minimum. You wont find anything smaller. You will NEITHER want to be in a house that has no burglarproof on every window, let alone a fence ;) I would avoid Bokoto (dangerous and very, very noisy - I know from experience) and Ntinda (traffic)
TIP: start emailing housing agencies (Avarst, etc.)

  3. Grand tip: buy from a bonded warehouse and avoid second hand once here.
You need a toyota. cheapest and most parts.
    Prices:
RAV4: 5000 USD (the 4wd for girls - cheapest, except maybe fro Escudo)
    Prado short chassis: 8000 USD
    Prado long one: 12000-15000 USD
But most expats not living off rich salaries seem to settle for Pajeros for some reason (6000 USD)
    etc.
