Sary Tash -4 questions

Country forums / Central Asia / Kyrgyzstan

Hi everyone

I am planning to travel from Kashgar to Osh in late August 2014, stopping in Sary Tash. Can you please help with information on the following:
1)Is a shared taxi still the cheapest way from Kashgar to the Kygyz border? Any problems experienced recently on this route on the Chinese side?
2)I will be arriving in Sary Tash with Chinese RMB & US dollars as cash. Are these currencies accepted in Kyrgyzstan and if not, is there a way to exchange money in Sary Tash?
3) Where in Sary Tash can I arrange accommodation?
4) Is it easy to hitch-hike or travel by other means to Sary Moghul to have good views of Pik Lenin?
I appreciate any info.

We were not able to change RMB in Sary Tash at a good rate. Said that, even other currencies give no good rate in Sary Tash, but RMB are really the worst currency (perhaps you find some truck driver). Dollar is the best currency for changing in Sary Tash, but better rates will be obtained in Osh.
No problem in finding accomodation, they usually await you on the street.
Sary Mogul should be not too difficult to get a lift (there are many transporters to a mine 2 km before Sary Mogul, otherwise traffic on that road is sometimes sparse).

Thank you joe_sixpack for the quick answer. This helps a lot.
Would you say people offering accommodation in Sary Tash (e.g. private home) will also accept US dollars or change money?

2

As in almost every country dollars are (still) accepted even preferential over local currency.

While in Kashgar maybe you can find some people going in the opposite direction willing to trade you for RMB? Just check at one of the local hostels. That's what I did a few years back. I'm sure they'll let you post an offer in the lobby
