Santorini honeymoon..and where else?

Country forums / Western Europe / Greece

I am thinking of going to Santorini for my honeymoon next September. We want to go for 7 nights and definitely to Santorini.
But..should we plan on splitting the trip between two islands? What would another good on be? We aren't too big into nightlife on vacations, we're semi-foodies, love the water, beautiful views, adventure (volcano hike, horseback riding, snorkeling, sailing, etc). I'm not sure Mykonos is the place for us, what about Crete? Or one of the lesser knowns?
I'm sure we can stay occupied for the whole time while on one island, but I don't want to miss out on seeing more. Is it worth it?
Is it very costly to go from one island to another? It would be via ferry, correct?

Thanks in advance!

Paros is very nice

Naxos is nice too ... both Paros & Naxos are on the Blue Star ferry line daily ... there are other ferries dailly too ... just 2-3 hours max, not expensive (16E). Both are better for beaches than Santorini ... on Paros u need to rent car or scooter to get to best beaches, on Naxos you can rent car/scooter or use public busses every 30 mins. And/or rent room or studio apt on beach. Also, Naxos offers horseback riding ON a beach.

2

You can also horseback at Perivolas beach in Santorini, but not ON the beach, but on the beach road

Why not just stay on Santorini for the week though? - book a calderva view villa, and lose yourself in the blue horizon>?

Crete would be a good solution too. There are daily catamarans to Iraklio until October. In the first half of September, you will find almost daily boats from Santorini to the small untouristy islands in the neigbourhood: Folegandros, Koufonissi, Amorgos... Thre are boats to Milos too. Buy a good guidebook and choose your island!

Crete is amazing! So many hiking opportunities, and BEAUTIFUL beaches. I recommend Samaria Gorge and Elafonissi Beach as must-sees. I think it's a 2 hour ferry ride to Santorini from Iraklio, Crete (wouldn't recommend staying long in Iraklio). If you want more info, I just spent a month on Crete and visited Santorini and Naxos. Let me know!

You don't have enough time to split your time between Santorini and Crete. Have a look at a map. Crete is Greece's largest island, and takes time getting from one end to the other. The ferries embark at Heraklion. From Heraklion to Chania [Crete's most picturesque prefecture] the bus takes 3 hours. You will lose one day travelling unfortunately.
The small Cycladic islands suggested by neckervd are some options, but since you are coming for your honeymoon, I suggest you stay put in one place. Island hopping means packing up/ port transfer/ferry trip/arrival/transfer/ -
btw - there is no direct ferry transfer to Koufounissia from Santorini, only via Naxos.

i would love to recommend santorini and crete but i'm afraid a week isn't long enough... stay in oia for the week... or spend a few days in paros...

7

I concu with coreybyrnes - better to spend a reasonable time in one place than get frustrated by seeing only enough to wet your appetite.

8

I spent 4 in Oia and 3 in Paros and had a great time.

9

Enjoy Santorini and stay in Oia for a week as coreybyrnes mentioned

Like I did

Paros has an excellent bus system. In many years of going there, I've never once rented a car or scooter, and had no problem getting around. Many people staying in Parikia (main town of Paros) hop on the 30 minute excursion boat to the neighbouring island of Antiparos where you have a choice of four or five beaches a short walk from its port.

11

BTW, if you enjoy water sports, Paros is famous for its windsurfing at Chrisi Akti (Golden Beach). It also has a kiteboarding center at Pounda, and very good snorkeling on its many beaches around the island, and on Antiparos. The long sandy beaches on Naxos, while good for sunbathing, don't offer much for the snorkeler.

hello to everybody

why nobody mention antiparos island as a very attractive destination for holidays? There is a splendid place call it glaros for relaxing holidays. The beaches are marvelous and the village have very interesting night life. I recomended this island and special the "glaros" studios and apartments for unforgettable holidays in Greece
