i traveled to managua by luxury bus a few years back. seems like the total trip was about 8 hours more or less. left at very early in the morning and was in manangua before noon. depends on your budget which form of travel you want to use.

Check TicaBus, I think the direct bus leaves at like 4AM from SJ downtown. Its about 8-9 hours.

You can also take a direct bus to the Border, then at the border, taxi hire or bus to Rivas, San Jorge for ferry to Ometepe or to beach at San Juan Del Sur, if going to those places, no need to go all the way to Managua. TicaBus may be able to let you off at Rivas once across border, but you will pay entire fare to Managua regardless.

There are also buses every 20-30 minutes from Liberia to Nica border, and same for Border to Liberia. If you fly into Liberia(LIR) you save a lot of time and troubles than flying into SJO, then bus or taxi downtown 40 minutes from SJO in Alajuela...

Hey! I'm planning a pretty similar trip 12/17 through 1/5, flying in and out of San Jose. I'm looking to travel throughout Nicaragua. After a lot of research, I found the cheapest way is to go by local transport.

Here's the schedule for San Jose to Peñas Blancas (the CR/Nica border): http://www.visitcostarica.com/ict/paginas/LEYES/pdf/ItinerarioBuses_es.pdf

Once you get to Peñas Blancas and go through the border customs, you can take a bus to Rivas, Nicaragua. There, you can easily get a bus from Rivas to Managua.

Hope this helps!
