San Antonio

Country forums / United States of America / United States

I'm going to San Antonio for business in the middle of March and I'm looking for some ideas on what to do. I'll have 2 nights and one morning free. I'd like to check out the Alamo, hear some live music and maybe some nature if time permits. I'm open to any ideas. Thanks

These days, San Anton is almost as well known for The Riverwalk as it is for the Alamo. Highly recommended, espec in the evening.

If you have access to a car, go to Gruene Hall for live music. It's about 45 min away from San Antonio. There's also the Leon Spring's Dancehall which is close to the city. There's good BBQ up that way as well.

Ack, Leon Springs. I hate apostrophes.

If you have a car, you should visit the old missions, there's a mission trail that pretty much winds along the river. I really enjoyed that.

4

Can I get to the old missions without a car? If I do have a car how do I get there? How far is it? Thanks for the info.

You are going to be limited to downtown and the Riverwalk area without a car. I'm not sure why you are getting suggestions about staying in Austin or the Hill Country----that is hardly practical if you are in San Antonio for business reasons. This is a link to the National Park Service site on the Mission Trail. There may be some organized tours available.

enjoy the riverwalk, do the floating riverboat tour down the San Antonio River (in the middle of the Riverwalk). campy but fun. See the Alamo, walk through El Mercado. Definitely eat at Mi Tierra. Excellent. If you have time, ride thorugh the Hill Country---Gruene, Fredericksburg, New Braunfels. As the other post said, Gruene Hall (in Gruene) is great for live music. Otherwise if you like mariachis there's usually some strolling around the Riverwalk at night in the outdoor restaurants.

You probably don't have time/car to get to the local Spanish missions. San Jose and Concepcion are the impressive ones.

A friend of mine may be driving down to meet me. How far are the impressive missons? Thanks

I just got back from San Antonio. I would not miss Luckenbach Texas if you have a car. It is a wonderful crossroad that has a general store and a bar. Any guitar player who wants to can pick a tune. People sit on benches under the oak trees and drink beer and listen to the music. If you know American country musicians, such as Willie Nelson, it is the place where they show up. Very, very informal with lots of bikers and lots of families. Look it up on line.

Also, are there any recommended places for getting some photography gear in San Antonio? I would looking for a Canon 70-200L, tripod and are there any place that does second hand lenses?
