Russian Winter Nights - Things to do?

Country forums / Eastern Europe & the Caucasus / Russia

Hello TTers
I am off to Russia for 2 weeks from 21Dec14 to 4Jan15.
My plan so far is along these lines

Need some advice on
1. What can I do on these long winter nights when the sun sets at 4.30pm?
- I am going for ballet on 1 night, cant really afford some performance on every night
- Not much of the clubbing type (in any case, that wouldnt be from 4.30)

  1. Can I book tickets for train from SPB to V.Novgorod after I arrive there?

  2. Any suggestions to enrich the itinerary that I have below is welcome.

21Dec14 (Sun) : Arrive at Domodedovo at 6am. Fly from Domodedovo to St. Petersburg at 10.45am. Hopefully, there wont be any horror stories about connecting flights
Rest of the day, walk around Nevsky Prospekt and generally take it easy
22Dec14 (Mon) : AM : Church on Sav. of Spilled Blood + Kazan Cathedral. PM : Historic Center
23Dec14 (Tue) : Hermitage Museum
24Dec14 (Wed) : C atherine Palace in Pushkin
25Dec14 (Thu) : Historic Center & Vasilyevsky Island. Evening : Ballet @ Hermitage
26Dec14 (Fri) : Peter & Paul Fortress
27Dec14 (Sat): Train from SPB to V. Novgorod (Stay in Novgorod)
28Dec14 (Sun) : AM:Train from V.Novgorod to SPB PM: Fly SPB to Moscow
29 Dec (Mon) : Bus from Moscow to Suzdal (Stay in Suzdal)
30 Dec (Tue ) : Return from Suzdal to Moscow
31Dec (Wed) : Walk around the red square, etc. Catch the celebrations at night
01Jan (Thu) : Kremlin
02Jan (Fri) : To be decided
03Jan (Sat) : To be decided
04 Jan (Sun) : Fly back

It's a pity you didn't ask for advice BEFORE booking flights!

It's not the best idea to return from Novgorod to St. Petersburg(A 3 hour journey if I remember well) to catch a plane to Moscow.

Taking the direct night train from Novgorod to Moscow could have save you a lot of time and money.
