running in Uzbekistan

Country forums / Central Asia / Uzbekistan

I'm going to Uzbekistan soon for 9 days and since I'm into distance running, I wondered if anyone can tell me, what people might think if they see someone running (wearing shorts and a shirt without sleeves) in a public park (at least that's the plan once the sun has gone down).

I have run in a number of countries when travelling, and while for instance in Mali people thought that was incredibly funny, in Ethiopia (a country where the best elite runners come from) people didn't seem to be too surprised.

In case all fails, do they have gyms - ideally with a good treadmill - that one could use? I will mostly spend my time in the bigger cities.

Many thanks.

They will think you are incredibly weird, if you are a female, you will get a few cat calls. But nothing too serious. Although unlikely, it is not outside the realm of possibility that bored children might throw stones at you (if in rural areas)

Thanks, I should have mentioned that I am MALE.

All the parks I went to in Uzbekistan (in Bukhara, Samarkand and Tashkent) people tended to stroll around even in deep winter, so yes yo may stand out a bit.

You will be OK. It's not utterly unknown, at least in Tashkent, because as in other regional capitals there are plenty of expats who run.
