Road from Bukhara to Khiva in winter

Country forums / Central Asia / Uzbekistan

Hi,

We are planning a trip to Uzbekistan in February, and our itinerary involves going from Bukhara to Khiva, in which most people do it by car.
How is the condition of the road in winter time, in terms of snow? My understanding is that some parts of the roads are still under constructions but we wanted to know if the winter weather conditions could affect the journey.

Thank you for your help!

It would be safer and more comfortable to catch the train via Samarkand to Khiva. Also, you don't have to worry about the weather...

The first 100 km and the last 100 km are bad, but the rest road is good. As this road does not go though the passes and mountains usually it is open. As I heard the weather in Uzbekistan in February will not be under 0C.

Train is good option of course, just limited on time (you need to catch at certain time). Car bit expensive, but you can find taxi and drive any time you wish.

Roads are good in terms of weather. Apart from mountains there is no problem with snow. At night weather might be very cold, but there are not much snow to be problem.
Bad road quality might be problem, but if you take a good taxi driver there will be no problem.
