Reykjanes Peninsula

Country forums / Scandinavia & the Nordics / Iceland

We will be driving a Suziki Jimny 4x4 and wondering if you can drive from the lighthouse in the southwest corner across to Grindamik and then down road 427 to get to hwy 42 and on to Polakshofn? The map I have rates it as an "other road" between the lighthouse and Grindavik. Don't quite know what this means.

Thanks.

For the roads around Reykjanes - Like Thorlakshofn - along Scoast up along the "end" of the peninsular, (or reverse as you describe) - and over the Keilir (very interesting fumaroles and geothermal area) you will be OK in any car - no need for a 4WD. - at least unless thing has gone worse recently. Some (most if I recall correctly) of these roads are nice (narrow) blacktops

You'll be fine. We just drove around the peninsula in a regular sedan.
