Resorts- The Edgewater/Sanctuary in Raro or Fiji instead?

A friend and I are looking at traveling from New Zealand to Rarotonga for about 5 nights somewhere between 12-20th September this year. We want to book our resort soon, but are stuck between two places. The trip was a sort of last minute decision so I understand there's not the most broad range of availability left. This is why we are looking at two places in particular- the Edgewater Resort and Spa, and Sanctuary Rarotonga-on-the-beach.

We are two females, 25 years. This is a holiday from full-time work for us both, so we want to go somewhere nice to relax, but I'd also like to have some optional activities around (snorkling, watersports, cultural classes or tours) so we don't get bored.
The Edgewater seems nice but I've seen a few reviews saying its quite dated and needs work, and might be crazy with Australian school holidays about to start then. Sanctuary is adults-only which is a plus but apparently shares most facilities with The Rarotongan next door, which our travel agent said they've had a lot of bad feedback from.

I've also looked at a couple of places in Fiji- the Sheraton for example. My friend really wants a white sand beach though and having been to Fiji before, I know you don't tend to get that on the main island. I get sea-sick so wanting to avoid boat travel to smaller islands. If anyone can recommend somewhere there we are willing to change the plan.

Can anyone chip in with their thoughts?

the one place that does have nice a white sand beach on the main island is the Intercontinental, the beachhouse also has white sand but no actual waves like at Natadola. LeLeuvia island also has nice white sand but that is a 40 minute boat ride. one advantage with the east side is that you can fly direct to suva rather than to Nadi
