Residence permit - Italy

Country forums / Western Europe / Italy

Firstly, I am sure that I seen this on here but I just cannot find it. Anyone?

Secondly. just how does one go about getting a residence permit in Italy? My friend is going for a year. Has ample funds and won't be working. That said, it's a bit tricky understanding the process. Anyone know how it all works?

Is your friend an EU citizen or not?

1

Better yet, what age and nationality is s/he?

Also, let's clarify our terms: are you asking about visas (the best one may depend of your friend's age and nationality) or about... well, as I recall (it's been a few years), not so much a "permit" as simply going to the local authorities and registering your legal presence?

Non -EU.

3

Then he/she has to apply for a long-term visa, not simply a residence permit.

4

The latter. He, late 20s, has his visa and is now in Rome. The residence permit has him stumped.

5

My OP is unclear. He has a visa abd got to Roma two days ago. Apology for the lack of clarity.

If he has already come to Italy on a normal 'tourist visa' and wants to stay in Italy for a year..without working, studying etc...I don't know of a way to do this.

Those ''Permessi di Soggiorno''are targeted at workers, students etc and when you apply here you need to show the appropriate documentation (eg work contract, course at language school etc.).I think there is a type of 'long term tourist' visa but you need to apply for that in your home country.

AFAIK there isn't a category for tourists to apply if you are alerady in Italy....

If this general info, isn't specific enough, you'll probably have to provide details about your friend's situation--what kind of visa they have, for what length of time, if they're planning to stay (mostly) in one place for the duration of the visa, if they're planning to work, if they're planning on renting a flat/room or staying in hotels, etc.

Better yet, if your friend has internet access, ask them to ask their questions here.

Because it's still very unclear. Does your friend just want an address of where to appear? We'll need a specific city, and if it's a large city, we may need the name of the street.
