(Re-)enter PNG from Indonesia. Need advise.

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

hello
i have some specific questions about accessing png from indonesia. my aim is to get to papua new guinea.

found some flights from kuala lumpur to jayapura (via jakarta). they arent cheap, but i dont know any other options. getting there by pelni ferry is apparently a bit complicated.

ill be flying over jakarta. i havent done any flights like these, so im not sure how it works. my apologies, but not everyone has travelled for ages. i just wanna stay in jakarta airport (and not necessarily leave it), which means i can't get a VOA there (unless i actually leave and checkout at the airport), correct? so in this case i would try to get an indonesian visa in kuala lumpur.

so anyway, ill be flying into jayapura either with an indonesian VOA from jakarta or one from KL. ive heard that visitors of papua need these special permits. can i get them in jayapura (do i need them at all?)

how can i figure out in advance if the border is open at all? do you know any actual website?

if open, ill get a png visa in jayapura, get the indo exit stamp, and cross the border. ill stay in png for 2 weeks and want to go back exactly the same way (as i have a return ticket). can i re-enter indonesia with the same visa??? or i do i need another one.

it might seem completely random, but i dont have any itinerary yet, as i want to find out first if i can get there this way at all. ill read it up soon, but if you have any suggestions what do do starting from vanimo, just let me know.

thank you very much.

actually, the title of this topic is wrong (and very confusing).

i mean ACCESS PNG and RE-ENTER INDONESIA

You can get an Indonesia visa in Vanimo in PNG to re-enter Indonesia. The consulat in Vanimo take can take up to 24hrs or so (during the week) and last time I checked it cost around K30. You will need to state how long you want the visa to last, if you don't they will only give you 1 week (or less) and it will take another 24hrs to get a new one. If you say you are going to Bali or Jogya then they will be more inclined to grant you a month or 60 day visa. If you say you are travelling in Papua then they'll probably only give you a week.

hi PNGMangi

- ill get a 7 days transit visa on arrival in jakarta airport, which should be long enough to fly from jakarta to jayapura and to get the png visa in jayapura and to enter PNG
- after my visit to PNG, ill get the indonesian visa in vanimo, in order to re-enter

- so it shouldn't be a problem to enter indonesia a second time, yes?

just wanna make that sure as i dont wanna get stucked there

thank you

You should not have a problem.
