Quito Hostals

Country forums / South America / Ecuador & the Galapagos Islands

We've been in Quito for a week and have stayed in three hostals -- thought I might stick a note on the thorn tree about them. We are used to low-rent hotels all over, so if you are the 5-star (hell, even 3-star) type, this review will be of little use to you. We always took a double room with a bath: that's what the prices reflect. YMMV

Old Town: Secret Garden -- a great place to hook up with other travellers: truly a backpackers place. A tad expensive ($38/day) and they charge top dollar for beer. It is narrow, dark and has a lively party crowd on the lovely patio that overlooks much of the city. They don't clean the rooms during your stay and be prepared for a little surprise on the bill when they add the tax.

Old Town: Hostal San Blas: a nice quiet place a block away from Secret Garden on a churchyard. You hear chruch bells instead of rock music -- different strokes. At $30/day there were no surprises at checkout, and they cleaned the room daily as well as made the beds. Tranquil.

New Town: Quito Antiguo: a nice traditional place in Gringolandia (New Town) with windows that open to fresh air and light. 30$/day with all taxes in. We got a double, but it has three beds. The hot water isn't as dependable.

Cheers, useful information. ...
