Questions about transportation in the fjordsCountry forums / Scandinavia & the Nordics / Norway
Hello Please help me on this, as I find difficult to plan the transportation around this area. On 2nd June I will fly from CPH to Stavanger and visit Lysefjord (Pulpit Rock). After which, I will fly from Stavanger to Alesund to visit Geirangerfjord. Question: how to get from Alesund to Geiranger ? Boat, train, bus ? What is more scenic ? What is the travel time ? If anybody can provide me the timetable, I´m grateful. I´m going to do the 1 hour ferry trip Geiranger / Hellesylt. From there, I want to visit Sognefjorden. How do I get there ? Now the most confusing part. There is the Fjord1 from Bergen to Flam and there is the train from Bergen to Oslo (end of my trip). Is the Bergen/Oslo train trip the same as Oslo/Bergen ? If I take the Fjord1 from Bergen to Flam and the train from Myrdal to Oslo, I will miss the train stretch Bergen/Flam, which goes via Voss, I believe. In case I catch the train Bergen/Oslo at the end of the trip and not do the Fjord1 trip, I will miss the Sognefjorden stretch. Am I right ? Which one should I choose ? Is there any way of getting from Geiranger to Sognefjorden without going to Bergen and still seeing Sognefjorden ? I intend to visit Bryggen, but this could be done at the end of the trip. From Flam I want to take the Flamsbana Railway and also the ferry trip to Naeroyfjord and Gudvangen, from where I am going to Ulvik. How do I get there ? In Ulvik I will catch the ferry to Eidfjord and see Handangerfjord. Also, does my itinerary make sense or is it crazy ? Do you have any suggestions to improve my itinerary ? I would like to see the fjords as much as possible from 2-10 June, without having to backtrack. Any help very appreciated. Thanks.
In summer, the northbound Hurtigruten leaves Ålesund at 09:30 and arrives Geiranger 13:30 (it returns to Ålesund 17:45). So to catch that from Stavanger you'd have to spend the night in Ålesund, or take Hurtigruten from Bergen 20:00 the evening before. There may be some bus too, but the boat is clearly the most scenic. Yes, the Bergen-Oslo train is the same as Oslo-Bergen. Sorry those were just two answers.... | 1
Thanks bjornmu for your answers, very helpful. But do you know if there is a public ferry from Alesund to Geiranger (used by locals) ? Because the Hurtigruten is an expensive cruise, for the tourists. If there is no other alternative besides this cruise, we will sleep in Alesund the night before and catch the Hurtigruten and, instead of coming back to Alesund, we will try to find some form of transport to Sognafjorden, but if we have to come back to Alesund, it will be by bus. Thanks again. | 2
We are going Alesund-Geiranger-Flam mid-May, with stops at Briksdal Glacier and Borgund Stave Church. Fjord1 bus Alesund to Hellesylt, 15-240 Fjord1 ferry to and from Geiranger(regular ferry, not the ship) Fjord1, Nor-Way buses to Melkevoll for glacier, 15-221, 431, 14-751 Fjord1 buses to Borgund, 14-751, 22-431, 22-170, 14-103 Fjord1 buses to Flam, 14-103, 14-102, 22-162 It would be easier to go directly from Hellesylt-Stryn-Skei-Laerdal-Flam in 5:45. Fjord1 buses 15-221, 22-431, 22-170, 22-450. You may also have more choices in June than in May, but I don't have those. | 3
I very much doubt there is any ferry used by locals from Ålesund to Geiranger. Who would use that when driving is so much faster? There could be some tourist boat though, but not likely in early June which is outside the tourist season. | 4
Thanks csdcsmith, I haven't checked this Ferry yet, but I think it fits in my schedule and itinerary. | 5
