Pulmoddai to jaffna

Country forums / Indian Subcontinent / Sri Lanka

Looking to travel drom Pulmoddai (north of Trincomalee) to Jaffna aling the coastline with public transport. Can this be done, in what time and are there restaurants and or hostels along the way,

Thanks
Tom

I cycled the route last year.

There is accommodation in Mullaitivu and at a small village called Parantan on the main road to Jaffna a few kms before the Elephant Pass. I didn't see any other places to stay, although there are a few resorts which apparently are owned by the military and foreigners are not allowed (or so other cyclists have reported). Lots of the coastal land here has been taken over (stolen?) by the military.

According to the LP guide there are busses from Pulmoddia to Mulaitivu.

I would guess there are busses going north towards Jaffna from Mulaitivu, but don't know if they go all the way. They probably don't follow the coast as the road has a gap at the mouth of the lagoon north of Mulaitivu. Cyclists and foot passengers can get a small ferry.

If you have plenty of time you could hitch or get very local transport to the ferry then cross the lagoon and follow the coast road. It doesn't go all the way up the coast to the Jaffna Peninsula and you have to come inland to pick up the main N-S highway at Parantan.

It is an interesting route and takes you through the place where the civil war finally ended.

thank you simonhill.
We are trying to sort out some 'difficulties' in our Sri Lanka route, to optimize between culture, beach and wildlife. As we will be travelling with 2 children (6 and 8), we will have to keep challenging them. the route sounds interesting!
