Looking to buy one in Urumqi or Kashgar to ride over the Karokoram highway. Have experience in cycle touring and want something that will simply not break from poor manufacturing and moves with relative ease. In other words a basic Giant brand bike. Seen them for sale in the US for between $500 and $1,000. Wonder if there would be any price variation or would be about the same cost for the same brand and similar model.
Would love to to equip everthing for < $500 and then sell as much of it off as possible upon arrivale in Islamabad or Gilmit.

No idea about price. Quite a few cyclists end up in Kashgar so you might be able two arrange to buy a second hand bike there if you're willing to hang around.

You'd get something in Urumqi for less than $500 that'd see you over the KKH. A friend bought a competent Giant/Merida MTB there recently for about that price, then rode it from Kunming to Bangkok. The only thing he had to do was adjust for the slack as the gear cables stretched. Caveat: if you're tall, you'll have to wait for them to order the bike, which can be a long time.

The panniers, if available are not very sturdy & not waterproof. Also racks are not good quality. I would try to bring panniers & racks with you. If you can find somebody who can read Chinese, check Chinese web sites for Giant & Merida. www.bardu.com.cn I think is a good web site. Alan
