Post volunteering in Toliara

Hi!

My friend and I are stuck for what to do once we have finished our placement in Toliara. We have just under 3 weeks of free time after we finish in Toliara and would like to see the avenue of the Baobabs near Morondava if possible.

We also wanted to know what is a good price for getting from Tana to Toliara by hiring a driver? And is it possible to hire a driver to get us back to Tana from Toliara as it seems its a lot simpler to get on a tour from Tana to anywhere else in the country but we are a bit pushed for time to get taxi brousse by the sounds of things too?

Any driver is going to want to be paid to get back to where they started from so if you can find a driver in Toliara it would be simpler. Getting from Toliara to Tana was an overnight journey when I last did it but you can easilly enquire if travel overnight is safe. You do have a fair bit of time so where else do you wish to visit? One consideration will be the type of car i.e. a car or a 4 x 4. I suggest you ask in Toliara. Also cannot your placement provide any advice?

Yes, getting any transport from Tulear is an expensive excercise. The piste from Tulear to Morondava is only for camion brousse or very good 4 WD's. The 4x4 - if you find a willing driver - will cost you at least 400 EU, as you pay gas and car for return also.
Better take a plane. But you need to book well ahead, as the flight is only 1 or 2 times a week and quite busy.
