Port Hardy to Bella Coola Ferry

Interest forums / Older Travellers

I have just reserved a place on the ferry from Port Hardy to Bella Coola (end of July) for 3 adults and our car. I think ithe ship is called the Queen of Chilliwack. The cost for the 15 hour journey (2 of us are seniors so they get a discount) is $ 650. We wonder if there is any kind of food service onboard. If there is food service, has anyone tried it? On other sailings the time is much longer. I suppose people pack food with them. Are there snacks and soft drinks, that sort of thing?

We took the Inside Passage ferry from Port Hardy to Prince Rupert - also approximately 15 hours - and there was very definitely food service on board. The food was nothing remarkable, but certainly adequate. Snacks and soft drinks etc are available. (Looking through our photo/diary I don't find any mention of it - so, nothing to write home about). You need not be concerned about that - see:http://www.bcferries.com/about/fleet/na_tour/index.html and do the "Virtual Tour" where there is amongst others a picture of part of the cafeteria.

Yes there is food, it's not great but it's there. I usually pack some food and you will have opportunity to go down to your vehicle periodically (weather permitting) and access a cooler if you wish. Pillow and blankets help also, I found it quite chilly even though I crossed in July. The longer sailings are the ones where they stop off at Oceans Falls etc...Enjoy your trip Bella Coola is quite beutiful

As someone who has to travel on a lot of BC ferries, I found that the food on this trip was actually better than on the other ferries. But it's always nice to stop in a deli and pick up some favorite treats for the trip, because the choice is limited, and rather expensive.

Coola and Chilliwack don't exactly hold out a promise of warmth, and wack is equally honest as a name for anyone who'd want to go.

Huh? Not sure what the previous response means (given that my family live in Chilliwack!).........

take gravol.
I've done this twice, once in July, once in November. If you are a flatlander, be prepared.

SusaninToronto... it's just Meddler being his smart ass self, 'playing with words'...
i.e. 'coola and Chill' .... cold words, ergo, lacking warmth...
andn 'wack'.... signifying 'wacky'...inferring anyone who wants to take this trip is nuts...
he loves to show off his 'erudite' cleverness....YAWN!!!!!

Before passing judgment on women from Winnipeg, we would do well to consider how they may have been affected growing up in a city flooded with dykes.
