Popayán what to do

Country forums / South America / Colombia

What is there to do /see in the area surrounding Popayán. Day or overnight trips. I have visited San Augustín and Tierradentro but am returning to the area for about 10 days and am looking for someting different to do.

Thanks for any suggestions.

There's the indigenous market at Sylvia every Tuesday morning which is a great opportunity to see the Guambiano indians in their bright purple tunics....also, the thermal pools at Coconuco are well worth a visit. During the week there's very few people there and the scenery is absolutely breathtaking.

For a bit more of an adventure, you could also head into the nearby Purace National park where you can scale the 4700m peak of Volcan Purace. If you have more time out there, you can visit the sulfurous thermal pools (I wouldn't swim in them though!) and the waterfalls which flow like milk due to the high sulfur content. Condors have recently been introduced into the area and as with many parts of the Cauca region, the surrounding countryside is lush green.

As for Popayan itself, there's a good feel to the city at the moment as people prepare for the famous Semana Santa processions. As we speak, the colonial white centre is being revamped and houses being repainted before the hordes flood in.

Not sure if all that is different enough, but if you can hold off for three weeks then you'll see something spectacular in the shape of Semana Santa.

If you need any more options then head to Neiva and on up to villavieja to the desierto de tatacoa
