Planning a trip to New York 17th to 26th Oct to see Paul Simon's farewell concert.Country forums / United States of America / United States
Greetings from London. I am planning a solo trip to New York but finding the accommodation hugely expensive. As a mature woman(55 yrs old), I am not really comfortable booking into a dorm type accommodation which seems to be all that is available within my budget. I would welcome any advice, suggestions or offers of accommodation. And, I am happy to meet up with likeminded souls whilst there. TIA.
Probably what you want is an airbnb accommodation with a private bedroom. The bathroom will be shared. Do take some time with this, and read the host reviews. Ideally your host will be a NYC native who can give advice. And check out the location on the map to make sure it is subway/metro accessible. Probably you'll wind up staying somewhere in Brooklyn or Queens to get a good price, so make sure your train ride into Manhattan won't take too long. | 1
Are you planning to spend the whole nine nights in New York City? Without knowing your broader interests, a trip to Washington DC for three nights is well rewarded. Inexpensive buses are available, or a train. And the advice above is good - make sure you're near a subway service, and buy a 7-Day MTA Pass on arrival ... they're good value for visitors (covering trains, buses, and a few ferries). | 2
Many thanks mstep. Brilliant advice about airbnb accommodation. I'll get on to it in the morning. Best wishes to you. | 3
Note that there are legal restrictions on Airbnb in New York City (over all five boroughs). You cannot stay less than 30 days in an apartment where you have sole use - and an absentee owner. It remains legal to have a private room in an Airbnb apartment where the owner / lessee also lives - and I would aim for one that had its own bathroom too. | 4
Thanks Coalclifff. Maybe I should consider a trip elsewhere although I am planning a leisurely break. My interests include art, music, architecture, good street food and all things cultural. I am sociable and curious and likely to chat to anyone I find interesting. Thanks for the tip about the MTA Pass. Booking airbnb is an option as suggested by another helpful soul on this form so I will get onto tht in the morning. All the best to you | 5
Thanks again Coalclifff. Very helpful. | 6
Check out the ALoft in Williamsburg Brooklyn, its in a hip and trendy area and short train or Uber into city... | 7
