places to visit in karachi?Country forums / Indian Subcontinent / Pakistan
Hi I am looking to stay in Karachi for 3 days in mid November. I haven't really explored Karachi and would love to see the city. Any tips on places to see and things to do? Thank you in advance and appreciate your time.
The National Museum is worth a visit, particularly for its artifacts on Moenjodaro. There are some lovely colonial buildings around the central Saddar district, including the old British era market (Empress Market maybe?) and some lovely churches. There's also at least one Parsi temple that you can try and keep your eyes out for. The Mereweather Tower is another British-era remnant, and the neighborhood around there is a mess of markets. The tomb of Jinnah is one of modern Pakistan's most important monuments. Clifton's an interesting upmarket neighborhood to visit, and the beach there is lovely to wander in the late afternoon, with local middle class families out for a stroll and a camel ride. I really enjoyed taking a boat across Karachi harbor to the sand spit on the other side, where there's an old Hindu temple and a fishing village atmosphere. I can't remember what it's called, but it should be easy to find on Google. Thatta makes for a great day-trip out of Karachi, though it'll be a long day. | 1
Giora, you have nailed it. To make things more interesting take a metro-can to take you round old City, not necessarily worth stepping out cause of heat and dust but that's another experience. Avoid public transport at all cost. Visit British Council or Alliance Francais and you will find good tips as well as other foreigners who could join you. Karachi used to be a cluster of stardust, sadly, no more :( | 2

Also visit Banbhore, it is an ancient city dating to the 1st century BC located in Sindh, Pakistan. The city ruins lie on the N-5 National Highway, east of Karachi. It dates back to the Scytho-Parthian era and was later controlled by Muslims from 8th to 13th century after which it was abandoned. Remains of one of the earliest known mosques in the region dating back to 727 AD are still preserved in the city. In 2004, Department of Archaeology and Museums Pakistan submitted the site for UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Apart from this also pay a visit to Makli Necropolis. Makli Hill is one of the largest necropolises in the world. The Shah Jehan Mosque in Thatta is also one of the high lights. | 5
