Hi all, Me and a friend will visit Iran this July for two weeks. I heard earlier that foreign cards (I'm Dutch) are not accepted in Iran, but this was before the sanctions were lifted. Does anybody know the current situation? Can we use local ATM's or do we need to take cash money? Thanks in advance, Joran de Haan
All the sanctions are not lifted. Michel | 1
Still some of the sanctions are on... . | 2
Hiya! :) MasterCard and VisaCard do not work in Iran. American Department of Treasury won't let Iranian banks use MasterCard system. :) More details can be found here Good luck! :) | 3
The way with opening a tourist account with an Iranian bank means that you will only get the official exchange rate, exchange rate on the street gets you nearly 15% more of Iranian money. All hotels have lockers or a safe for your money because they know of the situation. I have just been in Iran for 23 days and had no problem with that. I just went to the legal but private exchange offices at Ferdowsi Street in Tehran and allways deposited my money with the reception of my hostels/hotels. Regards, Marcus | 4
MarcusBaumgartner is right. But, you can change your money on Fersowsi Street and then put in a bank account. For example, at Melli-ye Iran Bank (bmi.ir) and get a tourist card that works with all POS devices | 5
You are so right my friend. That should have been my idea. facepalm
