One day left - what to do?

Country forums / Central America / Belize

It's Saturday the 2 and I'm on Caye Caulker. I fly home on Monday. I had hoped to visit the Community Baboon Sanctuary tomorrow but that seems out of the question due to lack of buses for low cost and lack of cash for high costs. So, if I go over to the mainland tomorrow, any recommendations of things to do? Also, any recommendations for a cheap place to stay for tomorrow night?

You would be left with the problem of where to spend Sunday night. Otherwise I would suggest talking the bus north to Orange Walk and visiting Lamanai. You are probably better off to stay put so you can get to the airport on time. I am sure you can find something else to do on Caye Caulker for another day.

Unless your flight leaves early in the day, you should be able to get from CC to the airport on Monday morning.

For places to stay in Belize City, try Three Sisters Guesthouse on Queen Street (near the police station, and an easy walk from the water taxi terminal). Freddie's Guesthouse on Eve Street (a bit further from the water taxi, but walkable). Also less than 1 km from the water taxi, Smokin Balam Guesthouse. All are lower budget accommodation.

For things to do, Lamanai is a good tour, but after getting to BC on Sunday morning and checking in to accommodation, it doesn't leave a lot of time to get up to the place where the tours start. Most tours begin around 9 or 10 am.

Check to see if the Belize Zoo is open on Sunday (the website isn't opening for me today?). Easy to get to by bus -- let me know if you need help.

Late in the afternoon, many Belizeans gather at BTL Park near the Ramada Belize City Princess Hotel. Food available.

My flight is at 11AM - that's the reason I want to be on the mainland tomorrow. I know the odds are against it, but I don't want to miss my flight because a water taxi has problems in the middle of the route. Anyone know how much it would cost to go to the sanctuary in taxi? I saw car rentals for $115-160US and that's a bit steep.

I considered the zoo because I've heard good things, but I really wanted that up close experience with the monkeys. I've been shooting video for my YouTube channel and wanted to get some 'monkey business' on tape. My plan was to have 2 weeks in Belize, but bronchitis at the beginning of my trip changed that. Otherwise, there were several things I was going to do.

Thanks for the info guys. I'm off to see Holchan today.

As an afterthought, are there any tour companies in BC that I could contact? Noone here arranges tours to CBS.

Catching an 11am flight is no problem, just take the 1st water taxi then a cab to the airport. I have also stayed at the Belcove hotel, a not bad place, just across the bridge from the water taxi terminal.

take the taxi over to ambergris caye.....much more to do over there.

The OP clearly states he has a "lack of cash" definitely not a contender for a tourist trap!

You are confusing AC with Cancun. Its not your trip so back off. The OPer will figure it out. Obviously CC doesn't have much to do does it?

viaggero, as you know, taxis in Belize don't have meters, but there are sort of standard fares. Although a taxi to the airport is BZ$50, airport taxis tend to be more expensive. For similar distances (BC to the Sanctuary), I've received fare quotes of about BZ$40 to $50 (always negotiate). That's one-way -- you'll have to pay at least that much to get back to BC.

Here's a possible option -- get a bus from the BC bus terminal to Ladyville for BZ$1 (while at the bus terminal, ask about bus service to Burrell Boom), then get a taxi from Ladyville to the Sanctuary. That fare might be closer to BZ$25. Taxi back to Ladyville and get a bus back to BC.

There are lots of tour guides in BC (they all show up at the Tourism Village when a cruise ship arrives), but I don't have any contact details. Try the phone book.

Also try contacting the Sanctuary about the best way to get there.

Thanks for the info guys. After a beautiful full day of snorkeling at Holchan that left me drained, I decided to do nothing on my last day and take an early boat to BC then go to the airport. Very uneventful, but I'll be in transit for 12 hours tomorrow (detoured away from home then a long lay over) for what should be a 2 hour flight. So, recharging my battery sounds good.
