Ominesan Trekking (in English)

Country forums / North-East Asia / Japan

I'm looking for information on a trek called "ominesan". I found a few lines on an old Lonely guide. It lasted 4 days, leaving Dorogawa. I would be known something about the duration of the stays and accommodations. Thank to everybody will help me.

Ominesan is a mountain in southern Nara Prefecture. It's a holy mountain, with a famous temple near the top run by a rather strange religious sect, that combines elements of Buddhism and Shintoism, and are also into various feats of strength up in the mountains. Officially women aren't allowed on parts of the mountain.

Since you mention a 4 day trek, it's most likely the route - one of the Kumano Kodo trails - between Yoshino and the Kumano Hongu Taisha shrine. That route passes Ominesan. Both of those places are towns which have accommodation. I've never hiked between the two, and don't know what accommodation is like - probably limited minshuku in the rural areas, combined, perhaps, with some camping.

I hiked a similar route earlier this year, from Koyasan to the Kumano Hongu Taisha. That took me 3 days, with one night where I had to camp. You could do it in 4 days sleeping in guesthouses every night. I found information on that route online. I'm not sure if there's similar information for the Ominesan hike. But I really enjoyed the Koyasan hike, and would recommend it.

Hi Giora!
Thank you for your answer.
I searched for some information on internet but I didn't find anything in a language I can read...
I wrote in this forum to know for example if I had to bring the tent and camping gear...

You can find lots of English information on the hike that I did here:

I'm not sure if there's similar information in English for the Ominesan hike though. When I visited Yoshino, I tried to find information about the hike, and if I remember correctly, even the tourist office in town there had absolutely nothing. I also walked along the start of the trail, and it wasn't very well sign-posted.

As for trecking to Mt.Ominesan from Dorogawa Onsen, i found this one(but in Japanese).

*Dorodawa Onsen洞川温泉 to Gyoujyagaeri Tunnel Western Gate行者環トンネル西口---by taxi or other transport
*Gyoujyagaeri Tunnel Western Gate行者環トンネル西口(1094m)→Okugakemichi-Deai奥駆道出会(1500m)---very steep ascend route/700m in distance/about 40mins on foot
*Okugakemichi-Deai奥駆道出会(15000m)→the foot of Yayama弥山((1560m)--very few up & down route(promnade course) but almost no panoramic scenery
*the foot of Yayama弥山(1560m) to Yayama弥山(1880m)---hard route
*Yayama弥山(1880m) to Hakkyogatake八経ヶ岳=the peak of Ominesan(1915m)---altitude difference is 35m so you are almost there=the top of Ominesan(1915m)

It takes about 3 hours from "Gyoujyagaeri Tunnel Western Gate"(1084m) to "the top of Ominesan"(1915m)/Altitude difference=820m/Walking distance=4,500m

I climbed Ominesan as a day trip from Dorogawa back in 2007: http://kaminoge.blogspot.com/2007/06/trip-to-japan-day-4_28.html
