Odd priorities but what can you do....

Country forums / Australia, New Zealand & Antarctica / Australia

I am looking for an inexpensive place to stay in the Rocks or Darlinghurst or somewhere that will be fun and centrally located. As for priorities, I am planning to spend my cash eating and drinking well, but traveling by myself it doesn't matter where I sleep (although I am a woman traveling alone). I am traveling for work, but am on my own for a few days. One of my friends here in the states (who lived there) recommends the Royal Soverign at the Darlo, or the Lord Nelson Brewery. Any thoughts from those who know the city best? Cheers- Bevin

Define inexpensive, please

Something less than $120AU, shared bathroom okay, but not a dorm room. When I travel usually with my husband or a friend we stay somewhere more mid-range (and also splurge on food), but this time around a cozy little room in a good locale is more my speed. Plus, these sounds like popular Aussie bars, which sounds like fun since I don't know anyone there. Thanks, Bevin

...and I just heard back from the Darlo that they will be renovating at that time, and won't be open, but rooms there were $66AU...

170 years ago you'd have had free lodging !

You'd have had free lodging and more

There are plenty of places within your budget around Darlinghurst/Kings X/Potts Pt on wotif.com

However, I don't know any of them personally

Yes, Pagoo, I am certain that I could stil muster up "free lodging" nowadays, but unfortunately it just isn't my style....

My god what unhelpful replies you've had!
I stayed with my family at the Lord Nelson in 2005 and loved it. I can't remember the price but it was fairly reasonable and anyway it would be cheaper for a single room. The location is great - only 10 minutes walk to the harbour. It's like an old-fashioned English pub complete with open fire and their home-brewed beer served in pints. It's very atmospheric and the food is good. The breakfast was included and that was basic but good too. The room was nice and clean and quite homely compared with your average hotel room. In short I would definitely recommend it. Enjoy your stay!

There's the Russell at the Rocks but I think the prices have gone up in recent years. Also Pensione in Pitt St has had good reps. I've stayed at the first, though some years ago, and have had a few friends stay at Pensione. Both good.

Seriously, I stayed at a B and B in Paddington, in a very nice house. It was $85 AU a night, your own room but shared bath ( if anyone else is there, she only has 3 rooms). Two minutes from the bus on Oxford Steet, Darlington is a 20 minute walk or 5 minutes on the bus. Bars and resturaunts an easy 5 minute walk.

The woman whose house it is makes a nice fruit-plate for breakfast along with coffee ( thrown in as part of the $85 ). I can give you details if you want, feel free to pm me.

I stayed there 2 weeks and quite liked it.
