October Cape Town Questions

Country forums / Africa / South Africa

Hey Guys,

I have been thinking that renting a bike would be a good way to get around Capetown for the few days that I am there.I have been trying to find good/recommended bike routes online that might take in a few sights but I'm not coming up with much.Would bikes be easily available to rent?Chapman's Peak drive looks worth a cycle definitely. The cape of good hope might be too ambitious.Where would be the best place to get a view of Table Mountain maybe? They all look lovely but I only have a few days where would you choose?

If you had to choose to go to Lions Head or Table mountain?
I was wondering Are the township tours worth doing or are they very touristy?
Is storms river the natural hub for Boulkrans bungee jump?

Chapman's Peak Drive is totally worth doing, its such a scenic road with amazing views. Personally, if I had to choose 1-2 places only to visit around / in Cape Town, it would be one of my choices. I have seen plentx of people on bikes. Im not sure you easy it is to rent bikes, hopefully somebody else can help.

A township tour will give you a glimpse on how life is for many people in Cape Town, away from the glamour and modern buildings etc. Its not touristy (you dont go in big groups, and there is no "show" put on for tourists or anything like that). The guides are from the local community, and so part of your money actually goes into the community. So yes, I would do a tour. I did a very good tour in Imizamo Yethu (near Hout Bay), but Im sure there are plenty of other good options.

There are lots of places renting bikes, Cape Town is after all home to the world's largest timed bicycle race (http://www.capetowncycletour.com/). Can't give you any place specific as I don't cycle myself but a Google should bring up plenty of spots. (http://goo.gl/TTSykB) Here's some maps: http://capetownbicyclemap.co.za/ but you'll get better info from the guys you rent from.

You can take the bike on the train to Simonstown (though maybe get off at Muizenberg) and then cycle to Cape Point. Chapman's Peak is a lovely route, as Nathalie has said and you could make it an almost loop returning via Constantia.

If you're into mountain biking, there's some great trails on the lower slopes of the mountain. Even with a normal bike, Tafelberg Road and Signal Hill Road are two very scenic roads to cycle.
