Is there an online journey planner for the NYC subway system?

Or you could just ask me | 3
This will sound strange, but half the fun of riding the subways as a tourist is looking at the maps in the stations and figuring out how to get there. It's not very difficult, and the trains and stations are far cleaner and far safer today than they were the first time I visited New York 27 years ago. | 4
Hopstop.com is the way to go - great directions, and it also does buses. | 5
NYC is much more logically set out than London is, especially if (as most visitors do) you confine youself to Manhattan. For the most part you need to remember that the avenues go (roughly) north-south and the streets go (roughly) east-west, and that (north of Houston Street) they are almost all numbered. Most New Yorkers don't need maps, even when going into unfamiliar neighbourhoods; most Londoners do need them when going out of known territory. | 6
Go to the MTA website, www.mta.info/ and click on the link on the left hand side to take you to the NYC Transit page. | 7
