For those who say there is no risk of Malaria in Cambodia

Most of Cambodia is it is true free of Malaria but there are still pockets and in assessing the risk of taking or not taking anti malarials it is essential take into account where you intend visiting

Thanks Bigal, I was going to post that link myself.
I stopped taking anti-malarials in Cambodia or any country about 6-7 years ago.
I feel that my normal activities of spending most days in the countryside, and returning to sleep in a proper budget hotel at night is relatively risk free. I think sleeping in a basic wooden bungalow without proper windows, doors and fly screens, where mosquitoes can fly in during the night, increases the risk enormously.

I too do not take them in Cambodia as not in a malaria area but very close to it One does have to be careful and assess the risk and in particular where there is malaria. I would say though It is not just where you sleep though as in many of the places you might be sitting out over a beer and a meal in the evening

I do take them usually on my African trips as still a lot of malaria there

Hopefully at least we will no longer see posts saying they have never heard of people catching malaria in Cambodia and the like

Who said there was no malaria in Cambodia? Khmers get it all the time, but I've never heard of a tourist or foreigner ever getting it. Have you?

It's not all about you there are others on these forums.

If I remember you have never met foreigners taking anti malarials but by all means if the cap fits.........

For what it is worth yes I Met a French couple who had caught it some years ago. Obviously tourists are more likely to take anti malarials in the first place and it is true many take them unnecessarily but the key is to understand the risk where you are going. As the situation improves in Cambodia not all health people are aware of the localised spots where it is still prevalent

One thing worth remembering about malaria is that the incubation period can be quite long meaning that someone infected may well have left the country by the time it shows.
