Newgrange wait times and crowds

Country forums / UK & Ireland / Ireland

I've heard many warning of tours of newgrange filling up early in the day in summer. But what can I expect mid-week in late september? If I'm there before noon, will I have a lengthy wait? trying to plan what else i might be able to do that day!

I was at Newgrange on July 16th - my father and I arrived at 4:45 and had no problems being admitted for the last tour at 5:15. However, judging by what the lady on the desk said it had been busier earlier in the day - I think it depends a lot on tours and so forth. You shouldn't really have too many problems come September I would have thought

Traveling how? Car, bus, train? If you take the train from London it will go to Salisbury where you'll catch the bus to Stonehenge.
Salisbury cathedral is nice.

There shouldn't be much of a wait at all for Newgrange. There is also a great museum / interpretative centre which is highly recommended which people usually look at before or after the tour. There is also the option to visit the sites of Knowth and Dowth as part of a tour. I think Knowth is spectacular - 16 different tombs and beautiful rock art.

Depending on where you are going afterwards I would recommend Slane village with the monuments on the Hill of Slane just outside the village - Church, monastry and round tower. There's also the Hill of Tara if you are going towards Dublin or Mellifont Abbey if you are going towards Northern Ireland.

I'd like to apologize for my previous post. Must not of had my morning coffee yet. Been to both; Newgrange in IRELAND and Stonehenge in ENGLAND. Not certain what I was thinking.

Thank you everyone for the replies. I'll have to look into slane. I was planning on driving from Dublin that morning, stopping at new range, then heading west towards athlone.
