New Monastery Opening in Hong KongCountry forums / North-East Asia
The Tsz Shan Monastery, funded by Li Ka-shing, will be opening in Hong Kong April 15. It's near Tai Po up in the New Territories, and houses the world's second-largest statue of Guan Yin. No tour groups are permitted and advance reservations are required. https://www.tszshan.org/home/new/en/index.php (Don't forget to read the comments on the SCMP article. E.g., "This is absolutely disgusting! Only in Hong Kong does a tycoon get permission to destroy 500,000 sq ft of our precious national park in the Tung Tse hills. A big chunk of our green belt for a kitsch temple with only the 'second highest' statue of goddess Kwun Yum.")
Well, not only in HK. Rich people have been destroying our planet for a long long time. | 1
I hate to break it to you, but this is the not the second tallest statue of Guanyin in the world. Wikipedia, for example, lists no fewer than 5 Guanyin (known as Kannon in Japanese) statues which are taller. So it is perhaps only the sixth tallest Guanyin statue on our planet. The fate of one of those statues should give tycoons everywhere some food for thought. I'm surprised that people who are not suitably harmonized are still reading the SCMP these days. | 2
