| theoldtraveler00:29 UTC20 Feb 2009 | Hi all, I posted this earlier today but it disappeared...goblins I guess. Anyway, I'm self driving for 3 weeks in Namibia beginning March 2nd, and wonder if it's possible to book a campsite inside Etosha at the last minute at the gate? How busy is it this time of year? Otherwise I'll stay somewhere outside the park and do day trips in. Also, how is the Caprivi Strip area for game viewing in March? Any suggestions on where to stay in the Caprivi area most welcome. Thanks, theoldtraveler

To me the big attraction of Etosha is the floodlit water-holes at Okuakuejo and Halali, which you would miss out on if you stayed outside the park. I would try to book in advance if at all possible. And it would also be wise to book at Sesriem if you plan to visit Sossusvlei. At the western end of the Caprivi strip one can camp at Poppa Falls. Further to the east the Mdumu and Mamili Game reserves are, to the best of my knowledge, strictly 4x4 territory and in March they may be more swamp than anything else. And in case you are considering Khaudom, just west of the western end of the Caprivi - that is also strictly 4x4 only and one must be in the company of at least one other vehicle. There used to be a camp-ground on the banks of the Zambezi river just outside of Katima Mulilo, next to a hotel/resort. That was long ago, but it is probably still there.
