Must See's in Samar?Country forums / South-East Asia Islands & Peninsula / Philippines
Hi! I am currently in catbalogan on Samar and I am wondering what is the must sees on this island. It is raining here and there there but the weather seems to be quite good generally at the moment. I would love to see some great nature. Is it better to move on to Tacloban and Leyte? The LP guidebook sucks as we already know, not much information in there about this island. There is not even a single city map of a Samar city The sectin about the Bicol region sucked too. What did the authors do while reseraching? Drinking beer all day? :-)
Come up just 20km north of Calbayog- Samar Sea Beach Resort in San Joaquin has great rooms at reasonable prices - all aircon, private bath, cable TV. Range from 1750p to 2500p per nite tax included. Discounts for weekly and monthly stays. Great Saturday nite disco and restaurant with good menu. Full service bar. Plenty to do - Rent a sea kayak and tour some of the local rivers and beach areas. Nice swimming and snorkling. Beach volleyball. Beach kubos relaxing daily use. Check out www.samarsea.com or call Lhen 0927-863-2796 or landline 055-301-2013 or 2014Samar Sea Beach Resort | 1
Supposedly some good caving there. Ask around man dont be afraid to talk to the locals. | 2
LP doesn't seem to care much about the Philippines guidebook. The last edition I saw was just a reprint of the previous one, with apparently no updating done at all. When you look at the Tacloban city map I'll bet it still shows a Children's Park on the north side of downtown, eh! Well that park disappeared more than 7 years ago. The McDonald's doesn't show up either. That map is old, really old and outdated. | 3
#1. It sounds good but we came from the north and are looking for things to do or see in the east or south of the island. We are based in Catbalogan and are interested in day trips. Waterfalls, nice beaches, rainforest and so on. | 4
If you're into surfing, try heading to Calicoan Island in Eastern Samar. Excellent left-and-right hander there. | 5
Careful in eastern and southern Samar. Check with the local PNP or AFP before trekking into parts unknown as there is some insurgent activity in that part of the island. North and West Samar are safe. | 6
Thanks kimo50. We will probably go to Tacloban tomorrow. We will give islands of camiguin and siargao more time. We might go to Biliran island if there is something worthwhile there. | 7
The Sohoton National Park in Samar is worth a visit. It is good for a day trip, accessable from Tacloban. There is also a cottage in the park which may be available to rent. You hire a boat from Basey, it takes a few hours to get to the caves and the natural bridge. As the river is the main means of transport in this area, you will see a lot of river activity, villages, boatbuilding etc. Take your own food and drinks, there are no shops in the park. You arrange a guide in Basay to take you through the caves, there are good walking trails and swimming etc. Some photos of Sohoton National Park here. | 8
you have a photo where the stalactite looks disturbingly like a... well... a man part. heehee. | 9
you see nothing about a samar city map because THERE IS NO SAMAR CITY! the only city in samar is calbayog but it is hardly a city at all. | 10
