Musanze (Ruhengeri) to Kampala

I'm doing a gorilla trek from Musanze and afterwards want to head to Kampala and then onto Jinja. What is the best way I should go? I've heard that you can cross the border near Musanze but it is a night bus so I'm worried about security so wondered if it is better to return to Kigali to get the bus to Kampala. I presume I could get a bus back to Kigali in the afternoon the same day of visiting the gorillas.

I don't know if there's a direct bus in the afternoon. I'd take the night one or just hold off until morning. It's a pretty low-key border; I'd feel comfortable going through it at night. My two cents :).
