Mozambique - visas at border?

Country forums / Africa / Mozambique

Hi. Does anyone know about getting visas for Mozambique at land borders? We are British and Australian nationals. I know we need visas, but what I don't know is whether we can get them on arrival at the border or need them in advance. I've looked up various consular websites etc but have found conflicting info on this. Grateful for any advice!

Thanks.

You can but I believe if you are travelling by bus (eg from South Africa) the bus company may insist you have your visa in advance so they don't have too many delays at the border. This was recently reported by another poster (Kelstrama) and perhaps she will confirm this.

Stokey is absolutely correct. The cost of a visa at the border is ZAR 172 (or, I believe $25), while at the consulate it is ZAR 750.

That's correct stokey, or at least it was when I did it in July last year. You have to show them your visa before they will allow you to board the bus. We only found this out the day before we were booked to travel to Mozambique.

Getting the visa at the consulate wasn't exactly straightforward. I'm very grateful for good friends in Joburg (who I met through the Thorn Tree - this really is a great forum!) who helped us out. Payment had to be made into a bank account nominated by the consulate. You then have to take the receipt from the bank to the consulate, which stops issuing visas as midday. I was lucky that a friend managed to talk them into staying open until we arrived.

Thanks everyone - that's very helpful.

Hi,
Does anyone happen to know if the visa charge of ZAR 750 is the same regardless of nationality (I'm Finnish)? I've also come across some sites that say that residents of SADC (which I am) are exempt from having a visa, and some say it only applies to nationals of SADC countries, so feeling a bit confused :)
Thanks in advance!

As far as I am aware it is the same for all nationalities, except for nationals of the neighbouring countries (South Africa, Malawi. probably also Zimbabwe) who do not need visas for Moz. If you want verification check the forums on [www.mozguide.com].

Visa cost definetely depends on nationality if you get it in advance from consulate, they have a list according to nationalities. And it is cheaper for single entry, expensive for multiple.
